FODMAP Certification

Funny tummy, Bloated? Gas?? Your doctor will probably tell you your symptoms are typical of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Your next trip might be to a gastroenterologist or dietitian to have a chat about your FODMAPs!

FODMAPs are short chain sugars that are poorly absorbed across your small intestine, causing them to pass undigested into your large intestine. This is where the real problem starts. But what are FODMAPs?

The FODMAP acronym stands for:

Fermentable – Sugars are broken down (fermented) by bacteria in the large bowel.

Oligosaccharides – “Oligo” means “few” and “saccharides” means sugars. Individual sugars are joined together in chains, called fructans (made up of fructose sugars) and galacto-oligosaccharides (galactose sugars).

Disaccharides – “Di” means two. This is a double sugar molecule consisting of glucose and galactose sugars.

Monosaccharides – “Mono” means single. This is a single-sugar molecule called fructose, which causes symptoms in excess of glucose.

And

Polyols – These are sugar alcohols, such as sorbitol and mannitol (they don’t lead to intoxication!)

The FODMAP acronym was coined by researchers to classify these offending molecules. Bacteria in the large bowel love the flow of undigested FODMAP sugars, as it provides them with the perfect cocktail for fermentation. Often the result is the production of gas and the onset of diarrhea. However, a low FODMAP diet can help to eliminate or minimize these symptoms.

Food and beverages can be certified as low in FODMAPs under the FODMAP Friendly Food Program. The FODMAP Friendly Certification Trademark is the only Certification Trademark in the world that certifies foods to be low in FODMAPs. It’s a Government Registered Certification Trademark, the rules of which have been approved by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission. These certified products are independently tested according to rigorous standards, at Australia’s largest and most reliable testing facility.
